Learning new English idioms, expressions, or proverbs can be made easier if you have an effective study method. Why not try the “Read! Speed! Say!” method we have developed?


1. Read the idiom, expression, set phrase, or proverb you want to learn out loud 5 times. Each time you read, try to remember more of the expression.

2. Now wait a few seconds and then try to say the expression 3 times as fast as you can without looking at the expression (Have fun with it – and do it really fast!). Every time you make a mistake you must start from 0 and try to say the expression again 3 times without making a mistake or forgetting the expression.

3. In this step, you will wait about 45 seconds to 1 minute before attempting this stage (so you can clear your short-term memory). Now say the expression again in a fluent and relaxed way.

4. Repeat this exercise again the next day, then a few days later, and then a week or two later. Remember, when you are doing the reading section, try not to read the entire phrase – try to recall (bring it back from your memory) the phrase. Trying to recall the phrase, even if it is wrong, helps you learn.


The following tips will really help you develop your reading and English language skills.

Read the passage 5 times and focus on each of the different points listed below.

1st reading. Reading for understanding: Read the passage slowly and try to figure out the core message and key points. Listen to what you have recorded and list any words you had trouble pronouncing.

2nd reading: Vocabulary & Pronunciation: Check any words you don’t know in your dictionary (or they might be listed on the Lesson’s PDF). You should focus on correcting any pronunciation issues (You can hear the correct pronunciation in the audio file.).

3rd reading. Speed: Now you understand your new words and have good pronunciation, you should try to read a little quicker. You must also focus on speed and clear pronunciation.

4th reading. Speed, intonation, and accuracy: Try to read the passage at the correct speed (check the audio file for how long it takes our teacher to read the passage), with correct pronunciation, and with the correct intonation.

5th reading. One last time: This is the final time for today (You should review this passage again within the next 2 weeks or so). The goal here is to read as fluently as possible (Don’t worry if you are not perfect, just do a couple of these lessons every week and you will improve. It takes time, but it DOES WORK!)

The goal is to score as many points as you can during a given time period (usually one week). The more points you score, the quicker you will learn English.

Scoring Points | 점수
3 points are awarded for every hour spent with a native English-speaker (or non-native English-speaker with advanced language skills) or teacher focusing on helping you develop your English skills.

2 points are awarded for every hour spent studying English alone (or in a group) from materials specifically designed to help people learn (e.g., language learning websites, textbooks, OysterCafe.com), or by studying any material with the goal of developing one’s language skills. Two points are also awarded if you are using English to communicate (writing or speaking) with other English speakers.
2점: 영어를 혼자 혹은 그룹으로 공부하는 시간 당 주어지는 점수입니다. 친구와 일상적인 상황에서 영어로 대화했을 때도 2점을 더하세요.

1 point is awarded for every hour of non-focused study. This means watching TV, listening to music, or reading a book just for enjoyment.

Bonus Points | 보너스 점수
• Half points are awarded for every 30 minutes of study. Anything less than 30 minutes is not awarded a point.
